Jarvis Landry admits his hip rehabilitation took an emotional and physical impact before the bye and he’s still recovering

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry – who turns 28 on Saturday – admitted on Friday his long trip home from hip surgery had physical and emotional consequences, but he now feels better after having decompressed during leave three weeks ago.

“This week off really gave me a little more mental life after spending almost 50-60 consecutive weeks of rehab, training and feeling like training and trying to make it through the season,” said said Landry. “Mentally, I was a bit overloaded too, not just my body. I was able to reshuffle myself, guess you can say, a bit with the bye and put my body in a better place, but I’m still not where I want to be. ”

The journey back to health actually began during the 2019 offseason, when he suffered a fractured sacrum that prevented him from participating in the offseason program. The fracture eventually healed, but the hip injury inflamed and worsened at training camp. He was held much of the camp and practiced sparingly throughout the season.

Still, he didn’t miss a game for the sixth consecutive year and recorded career highs in receiving yards (1,174) and receiving yards (14.1) in 2019. The total yards was the fourth highest in club history and his six receiving touchdowns marked the second-best total of his career. He was also elected in his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl and chose to play in the game and not have an operation.

But the hip inflamed during the game after a three-week layoff, and Landry changed his mind and had the procedure in February, which involved shaving off some cartilage and removing two pieces of bone encrusted in the labrum of his left hip.

He quickly embarked on the grueling 6-8 month rehab with the goal of being back on the field for the opener in Baltimore seven months later. Through his willpower and determination, Landry achieved his goal, keeping alive his cherished streak of never missing a game of his career. In Week 5 against the Colts, he suffered two cracked ribs in game three of the game when he caught a 32-yard catch and crawled on the sidelines. But he came back six times later and finished the game, playing over 50 shots.

Landry lost two assists in the fourth quarter, but never considered leaving the game. He played three more games in pain – and lost three more assists in the loss to the Raiders – before having a chance to heal goodbye.

It’s been a tough season for receivers as well, as the Browns initially introduced the run and have now played three straight games in bad weather that mostly wiped out the air attack. Heading into Week 12 with the Pro Bowl voting underway, Landry is tied for 48th in the NFL with just 38 receptions and tied for 46th with 471 yards. He’s still waiting for his first touchdown.

Last week he played 38 shots for 57%, but it was more about the pouring rain than the preservation of his body.

“I’m just thinking about our staff and how we try to attack in the weather,” he said. “With the racing game, we felt we had more of an advantage in the single receiver sets. We wanted to make sure that we were able to throw the ball in that time and only throw the ball when we had to. On some plays it was a good mix of guys coming in and the one catcher just to have no tendencies. Whether it’s me in the game at those times, KhaDarel (Hodge) or Hig (WR Rashard Higgins), we just have to mix it up to keep the defense off balance so they don’t know when the guys are out there though. we are going there. run or pass. ”

Landry agrees with Kevin Stefanski’s plan so much that he will do anything to win.

“Look, I want to be on the field every game,” Landry said. “But we try not to have any tendencies and we try to make sure that we keep the guys spinning, whether it’s so that we can kick me in a situation or to allow a guy he wants to race with to block. things eventually. It’s something that we don’t want to create a real trend with, so it seems to be a mix of guys playing around this time.

On Sunday in Jacksonville, where forecasts call for a high of 75 degrees and a 25% chance of rain, the Browns hope to showcase their skillful players more than they have in recent times, especially against a riddled secondary of injuries.

Landry knows the attack will have to help lead the day in Jacksonville, with defense missing from Myles Garrett, Sione Takitaki and Porter Gustin from COVID-19 and Denzel Ward from his calf strain. It has been a tough week watching a teammate after another positive test for the virus.

“I don’t think anyone has ever experienced a year like this,” he said. “We’re just rolling with the punches.”

On Thursday, Landry spent a pleasant afternoon with his family – Estrella, and their two children Joy and Jai – and reflected on his tumultuous year.

“Just be thankful and be thankful,” Landry said. “Life is a blessing. I’ve had too many people – I’m sure people on this call and people around the world – lost in the blink of an eye. It is a difficult thing. You look at life and no matter what you are going through or what you struggle with, you realize that you have another opportunity and another day.

“It’s a blessing, and I’m grateful for it. I am grateful that I can share this with my family every day. Then to come here and be a part of this organization and share with these guys that I also consider family, I’m just grateful and blessed. ”
