Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires ‘return’ CMA membership due to lack of homage to John Prine and others

Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires are waiving their membership in the Country Music Association after saying the organization failed to acknowledge the deaths of John Prine and a number of other artists at the 2020 CMA Awards.

“Due to the fact that @ CountryMusic didn’t mention John Prine, Jerry Jeff Walker and Billy Joe Shaver last night at the AMC, @amandashires and I have decided to return our membership cards,” Isbell wrote via Twitter on Thursday, when he announced that they would be rescheduling their dates for life.

Prine died in April at the age of 73 after contracting the coronavirus in March.

During the show, country stars Charlie Daniels, Kenny Rogers and Joe Diffie each received tributes.

Greg Freeman, another country artist, tried to reason with Isbell and asked if he was considering staying to work on the change from inside the machine.
