Jason Isbell recently announced that proof of vaccination or a pending negative COVID test would be required to attend his shows. He took to MSNBC on Monday morning to discuss the decision and the impact another lockdown could have on sites across the country.
“I think people who work in theaters and in the music business understand,” Isbell said during his interview. “From everything I’ve heard so far, all of the responses I’ve received from the folks at the company have been positive because they understand that we could go back to not working at all. And many of these small sites won’t be able to reopen if they experience another round of shutdowns. “
“I think they understand, but they get so much hindsight from the governors of certain states who want to bow down to their political base and try to make people believe that their freedom is being infringed,” he continued. . “I am for freedom, but if you are dead you have no freedom at all. So it’s probably important to stay alive before you start questioning your freedom, you know? This is life and then it is freedom and then it is the pursuit of happiness and these are in order of priority.
Isbell expressed his new policy on his Twitter account, noting that, “We now require proof of vaccination or a current negative test to attend all of our shows, indoors or out. If the hall does not allow it, we will not play. Isbell and his band The 400 Unit are set to perform quite a bit in the coming weeks and months, at both festivals and in states like Texas and Arkansas.
