Jason Sudeikis explained why he recently wore a sweater supporting England players Bukayo Saka, Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho.
The actor wore the top that bore the words “Jadon & Marcus & Bukayo” to the season two premiere of his Apple TV + show Ted lasso Last week.
Speaking on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, he said: “Well Jadon, Marcus and Bukayo are three of the English footballers on their national team. Yeah, those were the last young guys who took the shots on goal. They didn’t go like England certainly would have hoped, certainly many of us here in the United States would have, and people all over the world.
“And they caught a lot of jokes online, the three young black men. And our show is rooted in both, you know, despising things like bullying and racism or whatever, but it’s also rooted and set in London, England. And so yeah, that was just our way of using that big, whimsical premiere to put them in the spotlight and let them know that we support them. “
Referring to his sweater, he added, “It was just a way to humanize and personify these three guys. Their names are on the back of their kits, you know, their uniform, that’s why I used the first names, the names their parents gave them because they’re kids, they’re young men and they should have the possibility of succeeding and failing and attaching like everyone else.
Sudeikis’ support came after the trio fell victim to racist attacks online following England’s loss in the Euro 2020 final.
The attacks were denounced by Hollywood stars such as Tom Holland and Sacha Baron Cohen.
Meanwhile, Ted lasso recently received 20 Emmy nominations, making it the most nominated first season comedy of all time. Among them, Sudeikis received a nomination for the lead actor in a comedy series.
The second season in 12 episodes of Ted lasso debuts this Friday (July 23).
