It seems like Ted Lasso is really winning everyone over: Jason Sudeikis won the Actor Statue of the Musical or Comedy Series at the 78th annual Golden Globe Awards.
This was Sudeikis’ very first nomination from the HFPA and therefore his first victory. He’s come for his portrayal of the titular American football coach who crossed the pond to work for a Premier League team in the freshman half hour of Apple TV Plus. But Sudeikis first portrayed the character over five years ago, in promotional videos for NBC Sports’ coverage of the real Premier League. The character’s expansion in a wellness sitcom wowed audiences and critics alike when it premiered in the tumultuous summer of 2020, and it also won its top prize.
Sudeikis was nominated alongside Don Cheadle of “Black Monday”, “The Great” Nicholas Hoult, Eugene Levy of “Schitt’s Creek” and outgoing “Ramy’s” category winner Ramy Youssef.
“Ted Lasso” is currently in production for its second season in London. It was renewed for a third season in October before the start of production on Season 2.
The character of Ted Lasso originally appeared in a 2013 NBC Sports video to help promote that NBC Sports would start broadcasting English Premier League games. It turned out to be so successful that NBC brought the character back the following year to serve as an analyst.
The show proved popular with critics, with the first season getting an 86% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
