Salaries for on-demand programming skills, including Java and PHP, are growing rapidly. The advertised salaries of technicians increased for the third consecutive year, up 1.7% in 2018, with pay for specialized technical positions increasing significantly as the demand for .NET, PHP and Java developers continued to grow.
During this three-year period, Java developers experienced the largest increase in salaries – 41%. Their salaries have also increased 6% between 2018 and this year – the average Java developer earns £ 63,700, though it can reach £ 70,700 according to data from the recruitment company Reed.
The second highest paid programming role was full-stack developer, who pays an average of £ 53,500 to £ 60,300. This represents an increase of 5.6% over the previous year and 18.8% over 2016.

PHP developers saw their salaries increase by 20.6% over the three year period and saw the largest increase in all technology positions last year, up 6.9%. .NET developers also saw their salaries increase significantly over the period, with average earnings rising from £ 39,900 in 2016 to £ 47,400 this year – an increase of 18.8%.
In most popularity indexes of programming languages, JavaScript, Java and Python are the most popular languages.
Scientists, data analysts, technical architects, database administrators and network engineers have also seen their salaries increase by double digits in the last three years.
Pay for more business-oriented roles, such as commercial analyst and project manager, has also increased, but to a lesser extent than for developer roles.
Indeed, according to Reed's data, one of the few jobs to see wages fall over the past three years is that of director of information technology, which would have dropped between 2016 and 2018, before to go up slightly this year. Overall, average compensation for CIOs decreased slightly over the period, from 89,200 to 83,600 pounds.
According to Reed, this increase in wages goes hand in hand with a growing demand for staff with these skills: while the total number of announced technological roles has increased by 10% since the beginning of 2018, specialist roles such as data scientist (20 %), .NET developer (13%), and BI developer (13%) experienced significantly higher than average increases. The demand for full-stack developers – a role that may require many developer skills – has also grown rapidly, with a 41% increase in the number of roles announced since the beginning of 2018.
The data comes from jobs posted on the Reed website between 2015 and 2017, as well as advertised salaries.
