The mystery of Jaylen Waddle’s status reached the training ground on Tuesday as Alabama began preparations for Ohio State in the PSC national title game.
The ankle injury that appeared to end his season in October healed to the point that the explosive Alabama receiver was back on the field six days before kickoff.
“We’ll see where it goes from here,” Alabama offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian said Wednesday morning. “Obviously we’ve got about a week to go so probably a better question for Coach Saban, but yes he was back in training yesterday.
Waddle did not appear in the 2 minute and 26 second video posted by Alabama after his closed training, but he got good reviews from his teammates.
“Sure it’s going to take some time just for him to get back comfortable with everything,” said fellow receiver and Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith, “but he looks good on me.”
What about his quarterback?
“Yeah, he looked really great,” Mac Jones said, “but I’m not sure if I can answer that question correctly because you have to ask Coach Saban and the coaching staff.”
Waddle is No. 3 among Alabama wide receivers in receptions (25) and yards (557), although he missed the last eight games of the season with an ankle injury sustained during kick off in Tennessee.
AL.com announced Monday that Waddle will be back on the training ground this week and could play next Monday in the title game.
“Waddle looked good,” said fellow receiver John Metchie. “He did a lot of treatments. He’s been on top of everything, and I feel like that’s it. Him coming back, meanwhile coming back, I think everyone knows what he brings and what it brings when he’s on the pitch defending, how they look at that, how dynamic our offense is.
