JD Martinez won’t play for Boston Red Sox in American League Wild Card Game

Boston Red Sox hitter JD Martinez was dropped from the playoff list for the American League game against the New York Yankees visiting Fenway Park on Tuesday night as he continues to recover from a sprain at the left ankle.

Martinez was injured in the fifth inning of Sunday’s regular season finals when he tripped over the sack of second base while running towards right field. He continued to seek treatment for his ankle on Monday.

Outfielder Jarren Duran was included in the wildcard list, giving Boston a potential base trail speed option, as was Nick Pivetta, who pitched a scoreless inning of relief against the Nationals on Sunday. Another player on the roster is left-handed reliever Josh Taylor, who hasn’t pitched since September 22 while recovering from a back injury.

Chris Sale, who started Sunday’s game, was not on the list.

Yankees ace Gerrit Cole (16-8) faces Nathan Eovaldi (11-9) at Fenway. The winner of the Yankees-Red Sox will face AL East champions, the Tampa Bay Rays, starting Thursday in St. Petersburg, Fla.
