While Jean-Claude Van Damme has played the hero in films like Universal Soldier and Street Fighter, the action star was inadvertently involved in a criminal storyline this week. While in Paris on Tuesday, the actor accidentally helped a jewelry thief escape law enforcement, as reported by TMZ.

Van Damme drew a crowd of fans on an appointment with an optometrist. As people gathered to catch a glimpse of the actor, a gray-haired man pointed the knife at nearby jeweler Chaumet, stealing gems and jewelry from the shop. The man had barged into the store on an electric scooter.

The loot is estimated to be worth between 2 and 3 million euros.

Although there were plenty of potential witnesses in the area, law enforcement said most of the group’s attention was on Van Damme. The thief was able to have a largely discreet jaunt on an electric scooter.

Although Van Damme’s presence may have distracted witnesses, surveillance cameras captured the incident. Police arrested two suspects on Wednesday morning and recovered a “substantial part” of the loot. According to Euronews, the couple were arrested after traveling by bus to Moselle, a department in eastern France close to the country’s border with Germany.

In our review of Van Damme’s new film, The Last Mercenary, IGN gave the film a 5, saying the film has “a fun approach. [JCVD’s] past achievements as an action star, but the humor is far more failed than successful. “
