Jean-Pierre Adams, the former French footballer who spent 39 years in a coma following routine knee surgery that went horribly wrong, died on Monday.
He was 73 years old.

One of the first black players to compete for France, Adams fell into a coma on March 17, 1982 while undergoing routine surgery on a damaged knee tendon in a game.
According to CNN, several workers at Adams Hospital were on strike, resulting in an anesthesia error.
“The female anesthetist took care of eight patients, one after the other, like an assembly line,” his wife Bernadette said at the point of sale in 2016. “Jean-Pierre was supervised by a trainee, who repeated a year old, who later admitted in court: ‘I was not up to the task given to me.’ “
Adams had been lying in a coma at his home in Nîmes, where he had been cared for by his wife, for nearly four decades.
After starting his career at Fontainebleau, where he helped the home side win their amateur championship, Adams was spotted by Nimes.
He scored 10 goals in 98 games for Nîmes and 17 goals in 150 games for Nice.
The Senegalese native also amassed 22 caps for the French national team.
“Nice was heartbroken to learn of the death of Jean-Pierre Adams,” Nice wrote on Twitter, “The former defender wore the Gym colors 145 times from 1973 to 1977. OGC Nice stands with the grief of his loved ones who watched after him for 39 years.
Nice added that a tribute will be paid to Adams in his home game against Monaco on September 19.
