Jean-Pierre Adams, a former French footballer who played for Nice and Paris Saint-Germain during his career, died Monday after spending 39 years in a coma. He was 73 years old.
Paris Saint-Germain have announced Adams’ death, calling the former center-back a “glorious former”.

“His joie de vivre, his charisma and his experience command respect. Paris Saint-Germain offers its condolences to his family and loved ones,” said PSG.
Adams made 126 appearances for Nice and 41 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain. He also took the field for Nîmes, Mulhouse and Chalon. He also played 22 matches for the French team.

The Senegalese native was injured in a game in 1982 and had to undergo knee surgery. However, during his operation in a Lyon hospital, an anesthetic error caused him to fall into a coma. Since then, his wife Bernadette has looked after him in Nîmes, France.
The anesthesiologist and the intern were punished years later, each listening to a month’s suspended sentence and a fine, according to BBC Sport.

Adams has made over 285 appearances on the football field and scored over 25 goals. He played the last matches of his football career with Chalon in Ligue 2.
