Jean Smart is a proud mother.

The 70-year-old actress introduced her son Forrest to the 2021 Emmy Awards as they walked the red carpet together on Sunday.

She then thanked Forrest, 13, and her eldest son, Connor, while accepting the trophy for Best Leading Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in “Hacks.”

During the speech, Smart called them “my two wonderful and selfless children… who are both very courageous in themselves”.

She also tearfully thanked her husband, Richard Gilliland, who died in March from a brief illness.

“Before I say anything, I must thank my late husband, who passed away six months ago yesterday, and I wouldn’t be here without him. Without putting his career on hold so that I can take advantage of all the wonderful opportunities I have had, ”she said.

The Designing Women alum and Gilliland, who was an actor, welcomed Connor, 31, in 1989 and adopted Forrest from China in 2009.

Forrest told Karamo Brown on the red carpet earlier on Sunday that he was “very proud of her mother” and added that she deserved all the accolades because “she worked so hard.”

Smart, who looked stunning in a Ralph Lauren gown, was indifferent to the gentle response and admitted that she felt guilty for being away from work, which prompted Forrest to say: “It ‘ was OK. “

It’s been a year of ups and downs for the star. She won rave reviews for her supporting role as Kate Winslet’s mother in “Mare of Easttown” and her starring role as the legendary Las Vegas stand-up comedian in “Hacks.”

Smart lost Gilliland, 71, after more than 30 years of marriage. Before his death, the couple were due to work together this summer in a film directed by Tate Taylor.

“He was a great dad and he made me laugh every day,” Smart said in a recent interview with Variety. “His death was never a thought. And that has changed every moment of my daily life; every atom of my existence that I feel is altered.

“But I just want people to know how much he sacrificed himself to be where I am, and to get the opportunities that I had and to let his career take a back seat to help take care of our home. and our kids. And it kills me that he didn’t have the chances that I had, because he was so talented. I was very lucky when I met him.
