Earlier this month, Mai, 41, was forced to quit as a celebrity in season 29 of “Dancing with the Stars” after being diagnosed with epiglottitis, a very rare and potentially fatal condition that occurs when the tissue protecting the trachea becomes inflamed, possibly blocking the flow of air to the lungs. She later learned that she also had a parapharyngeal abscess and was “rushed to the emergency room” for surgery.
After the procedure, Mai, who described her fear of health as a “traumatic experience”, was only allowed to consume fluids and “be still” for two weeks. “Really tired” and even “a little depressed”.
“While eating food, I did not eat hot food for two weeks. You could actually do very big damage, ”said Mai. “So I ate a lot of cold soups and a lot of juice.”
“The other thing mentally is that I’m a little depressed because I lost about 10 pounds. Just by eating liquids, so I’m really frail right now. Really, really frail,” she continued. , saying that she felt “really tired because I am so underweight and malnourished.”
“I lost a lot of weight and strength, 15 pounds total from ‘DWTS’ and bed rest,” Mai added, noting that she was eager to get back into shape. “[I] I can’t wait to go back to the gym to get my body back and my health to conquer my dreams again. “

However, the former ‘DWTS’ competitor said the hardest part of the recovery was sleeping.
“When I go to sleep, if you are breathing badly you have a coughing fit and it hurts like crazy and it bleeds,” Mai said. “So sleeping was hard because you couldn’t really go to a snoring sleep – you couldn’t sleep very heavy.
Fortunately, Mai said she was now “96% better”, but “couldn’t scream”.
She added that she was “able to eat solid foods again” and that she “incorporated starches, meat and things that [she] can chew. “
“I can’t chew solid and solid food. I can’t have it like bread, or anything like crackers, but maybe I can eat like porridge or maybe [a] matzo ball, ”Mai explained.
In the end, the star said she was “grateful to be alive” and had been urged to go to the emergency room.
“I’m grateful to have learned that you really can’t take your health for granted.”
