The Chicago Cubs have today decided not to offer a 2021 contract to Kyle Schwarber, now a free agent. Schwarber has been with the organization for seven years and was a playoff hero for the Cubs in 2015 and 2016. It will just take a while to adjust to this new reality.
On the decision to go ahead without bidding Schwarber a contract, and the possibility that the parties could later agree to a new deal, Cubs president Jed Hoyer spoke with the media. Yes, a meeting is possible, but a free agent is a free agent.
Here is Hoyer:
Jed Hoyer on Schwarber: “It was a difficult conversation. I called Kyle. We will definitely keep the door open. We will continue to talk about ways to bring him back … We had a good conversation. a caption. No question about that. “

Hoyer on Schwarber: “I don’t think he was surprised, with that possibility. I don’t think he was blind. Obviously he was disappointed.” … “I don’t think the door is closed (regarding a new signature).”

Hoyer on Schwarber 2/2:
“…[our] affection and gratitude for all he has done. I don’t think the door is closed. … Look, he’ll always be a Cubs legend – there’s no doubt about it, as it should be.
