BEREA, Ohio – Chris Hubbard replaced Browns left tackle Jedrick Wills Jr. against Kansas City last Sunday after Wills was rushed to the locker room with an ankle injury. But Hubbard himself suffered an injury in the 33-29 loss – a triceps injury that ruled him out of practice on Wednesday.
With Wills on the day-to-day and also out on Wednesday, coach Kevin Stefanski admitted he wasn’t sure who would start as left tackle on Sunday in the home opener against the Texans.
“Good question,” Stefanski said. “We have plans. We will make it work. It’s definitely something that we’re on the whiteboard to figure out who’s going to be where. ”
To make matters worse, right tackle Jack Conklin also missed Wednesday’s practice with a knee injury, one of four offensive linemen who were inactive. Conklin, also injured in Sunday’s game, rode the stationery bike alongside No.4 lineman JC Tretter, who sat down with a sore knee.
But Stefanski indicated that the days off for Conklin and Tretter were more careful than anything else.
“With all these guys we’re just trying to be smart,” Stefanski said. “Partly yes, they are veterans and they want to make sure we have them for the long haul.”
If Wills and Hubbard can’t play, the Browns can eventually move Conklin to the left tackle and insert rookie James Hudson, their Cincinnati fourth-round pick, down the right side. They probably have other contingency plans as well.
Safety Grant Delpit has a chance
Stefanski said Delpit, who was inactive for the Chiefs game, had a chance to face the Texans 1-0 on Sunday.
“We will be training for the next few days with him and see how he reacts,” Stefanski said. “He worked very, very hard, as you know. He’s someone who tries like crazy in these one-on-one exercises, in the boardroom and in special teams. So he works very hard.
The Browns certainly could have used Delpit on Sunday, as Ronnie Harrison Jr. was ejected in Game 5 for trading blows with Chiefs running back coach Greg Lewis.
Stefanski wouldn’t reveal if the Browns sent a complaint to the NFL office, but they probably did. Myles Garrett and Tretter both said what Stefanski couldn’t, that they felt Lewis should be held responsible for pushing Harrison first, when he believed safety was intentionally stepping on his running back.
CB Greg Newsome, WR Anthony Schwartz, LB Mack Wilson all limited
Newsome (bicep injury), Schwartz (knee) and Wilson (quad) were all limited to training. Newsome, the team’s first-round draft pick, placed third among Browns defensemen in his NFL debut, according to Pro Football Focus. Third Round Schwartz was third on the team with 69 yards on three catches in his NFL debut.
Fourth-round rookie defensive tackle Tommy Togiai was sidelined with an unspecified illness.
Texans 1-0
Stefanski wasted no time making sure his 0-1 Browns didn’t take the Texans lightly. Starting Sunday night, he started calling them the Texans 1-0 after their 37-21 win over the Jaguars. With Deshaun Watson still in limbo over his legal issues, former Browns QB Tyrod Taylor is their starter.
“A very good football team, 1-0 in our building,” Stefanski said. “Coach (David) Culley did an amazing job with them. You can see his influence in their attack and think their team as a whole. They play very physical football. The quarterback is playing at a very high level. I was very impressed with him. Defensively, (defensive coordinator) Lovie Smith, they’ll try to take the ball. That’s what he’s known for.
“He’s really done it every step of his career, and you saw last week they won it three times. The special teams, they have a great feedback and are really well coached. Quite a challenge this week, and the guys are looking forward to a week of training.
