Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos announced the terms of their divorce via two publications on Twitter Thursday. One of the most striking elements is that they both used the same word over and over.
Let's talk quickly about the tone of the statements and the fact that they reached this resolution very quickly, while it could have left a serious cloud over Amazon.
No divorce is easy. But, between the spotlight, the tabloids – and of course, the fact that Jeff Bezos is heading Amazon, of course, and MacKenzie Bezos played an important role in his initial development – it was threatening to become a mess.

You may remember that a month after the couple announced their divorce plan, Jeff Bezos wrote his very first message on Medium and accused the National Enquirer extortion and blackmail.
We now hear allegations that the Saudis have hacked his smartphone. Thus, it is now remarkable that Jeff and MacKenzie seem to have resolved their differences quickly.
In short, she retains 25% of their holdings in Amazon, which is about $ 35 billion and will make her the fourth richest woman in the world.
It keeps the remaining 75%, plus The Washington Post and Blue Origin, and retains control of the 25% MacKenzie vote.

I reworked the statements of Jeff and MacKenzie to take a closer look at the structure. Then, I realized that they were exactly the same length: 93 words each, and displayed exactly at the same time: 13:04. Eastern Time.
And, they both continue to use the same words. Let's start with "grateful", that they used twice each.
- Mackenzie: "grateful to have completed the process of dissolving my marriage with Jeff with support … grateful for the past while I look forward to following up on things."
- Jeff: "I'm very grateful to all my friends and family … especially MacKenzie, I'm grateful for his support and kindness in this process …"
We have all heard repeatedly that gratitude is the key to happiness. So it's a striking image to create when one speaks of such a difficult situation.
Who would not want to accentuate the positive if possible after more than 25 years of marriage and four children?
They also used the same phrase to describe their future relationship: "co-friends and friends," MacKenzie called; Jeff reversed the order by saying "friends and co – parents".
The medium makes it seem less impersonal
Jeff and MacKenzie are excellent writers. Jeff's annual letters from Amazon are analyzed by the thousands; MacKenzie has written some well-received novels.
I am almost surprised to conclude that the wording of the statements (perhaps even the corresponding lengths) was part of their agreement. It makes sense; it's just that publishing them first on Twitter makes it all less impersonal.
By way of comparison, I've taken a look at what has happened over the last decade, after former GE chairman, Jack Welch, and his second wife, Jane Beasley, settled their super controversial divorce.
"In a terse statement of a sentence," The New York Times reported then, "they said that they had settled their differences and were divorced."
I think we probably all prefer how Jeff and MacKenzie handled the situation.
