It’s ESPN v WFAN again, but instead of Michael Kay and Mike Francesa fighting, it’s baseball insider Jeff Passan and new afternoon host Craig Carton.
Carton and Evan Roberts went to Passan for waiting so long to publish the story of former Mets general manager Jared Porter sexually harassing a reporter. ESPN started working on the story in 2017, but it wasn’t released until recently.
Going to ESPN Radio, Passan took to Cardboard, explaining the process and hammering out WFAN.
“There’s another radio station in New York that was damn irresponsible today about covering this, and I hate giving them shine because they don’t deserve it,” Passan said. . “But the idea that ESPN has been sitting on this story since 2017 is the most gigantic load of irresponsible garbage I’ve heard in a long time.
“As journalists, we have a duty to protect our sources and care for the people who tell us the stories we can tell. It’s their story, it’s not ours. And the idea that we’ve been sitting on it, because this woman, who went through a horrible thing with someone in a position of power and ended up having to go back to her country and get out of journalism because of it, the idea that she wasn’t ready at the time is perfectly rational and normal and the type of response I think each of us might experience. She wasn’t ready.
“The story waits when the person it is, is ready to tell it. And so, she waited, and left the industry where she feared she would have negative reactions and potentially see her work harmed. And she saw Jared Porter becoming general manager of the New York Mets, putting him in a position of great power and great authority, and thought to herself, ‘This man, who has the job of his dreams, ended up make it easier for me to lose my dream job. And I didn’t do anything… I didn’t do anything.
“And so the idea that this story, four and a half years after this incident, has less resonance, has less importance, and has less right to be told – anyone who thinks that has to shut up.” “
The controversial Carton, who returns after a three-year absence from the airwaves, including one in federal prison for fraud, responded on Twitter Wednesday morning. Carton claimed the bigger issue was how Passan responded favorably to Porter’s hiring for the Mets a month ago.

However, Passan said he had only just been recruited to help cover the story and that Mina Kimes, co-author of the article, was the one working her since 2017.
