Jeff Wilson signs one-year contract with 49ers after leading the team in the race

The 49ers signed running back Jeff Wilson Jr. for a one-year contract on Tuesday, the club said.

Wilson, a three-year NFL veteran, was due to be a restricted free agent in mid-March.

The 25-year-old, who joined the 49ers in 2018 as an undrafted rookie from North Texas, has led the club this season with 600 yards and seven touchdowns on 126 rushing attempts. He also had 13 receptions for 133 yards and three touchdowns.

Wilson became the fourth different player to lead the 49ers in the past four seasons, joining Raheem Mostert (772 yards in 2019), Matt Breida (814 yards in 2018) and Carlos Hyde (938 yards in 2017).

The 49ers are able to pitch Mostert and Wilson as the team’s two best running backs next season. Tevin Coleman and Jerick McKinnon are not under contract and have no plans to return.

JaMycal Hasty, who made eight appearances in his rookie season, is also expected to be back with the club. Hasty had 39 carries for 148 yards and a touchdown.
