What the National Weather Service calls a "violent tornado" hit Wednesday night in the city of Jefferson, Missouri, leaving people trapped, power lines on the ground and extensive damage. All available first responders were called in the city – the capital of the state of Missouri. Police said they received reports of injuries. The weather service said that a "confirmed and destructive big tornado" had been seen over Jefferson City at 11:43 pm. Wednesday, moving northeast at 40 mph. The city has a population of about 40,000 and is located 130 miles west of St. Louis.
"More dangerous weather conditions – tornadoes and flash floods – expected overnight," according to a tweet from the Missouri Department of Public Safety.
