Jen Psaki blames DeSantis for fundraising over White House conflict

  • Jen Psaki lambasted Governor Ron DeSantis for raising funds during his dispute with the White House.
  • Biden and DeSantis have argued against DeSantis, which makes it more difficult for schools to demand masks.
  • “I want public health officials to make decisions about how to protect my children,” Psaki said.

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki called Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Friday for raising funds following a row with the White House over his signing of a bill aimed at reducing funding to local school districts that require students to wear masks.

“As a parent myself of two young children, I want public health officials to make decisions about how to protect my children – not politicians,” Psaki said during his press briefing.

“And not only is Governor DeSantis not respecting public health decisions, but he is raising money because of it,” she added. “So my point of view, and our point of view as an administration, is that parents in Florida and parents across the country should have the ability and the knowledge that their children are going to school and that they are in safe environments. ”

The beef began on Tuesday, when Biden called DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for signing bills that make it harder for communities, school districts and businesses to require vaccinations or the wearing of a mask.

Both states have a rapid increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, mainly due to the highly contagious Delta variant.

“Some state officials are passing laws… that prohibit people from doing the right thing,” Biden said Tuesday of the pandemic. “I say to the governors, please help. If you are not going to help, stay away from the people who are trying to do the right thing. Use your power to save lives.”

In response, DeSantis blamed the Biden administration for the increase in cases, saying it had imported “more viruses from around the world by having a wide open southern border.”

“Why don’t you do your job? Why don’t you secure this border, and until you do, I don’t want to hear about COVID from you, thank you,” DeSantis said.

Biden in turn was asked about DeSantis’ comments at a White House event on electric vehicles on Thursday. “Governor who? ” he said. “This is my answer.”

DeSantis’ rebuttal came in a Friday morning fundraising email sent via the Conservative Review mailing list.

“Joe Biden wants me to step down because I refuse to cede power to the federal government and deprive Floridians of their freedoms,” he wrote. “Well, I’ve got news for Joe Biden: I’m standing in your way and I’m not going anywhere.”

Then, in a fundraising email sent shortly after 1:30 p.m., the DeSantis campaign said that Biden was “taking away the freedoms of law-abiding Americans” and that the governor “would not bow to Joe’s bossy bullying. Biden or whoever. He will ALWAYS stand up for the freedom of Floridians. “
