Jenna Dewan says her experiences as a new mom differed greatly from partner to partner.
The actress and dancer, 40, said on the Dear Gabby podcast that her son Callum, along with her fiance Steve Kazee, was born in a “love nest” in March 2020, at the start of the pandemic, giving the family months together to bond at home. This was not the case when she had her daughter Everly, 8, with her ex-husband Channing Tatum.
It was big news when Dewan and Tatum, who reunited after starring in Intensify, welcomed Evie to London, where he had filmed Jupiter’s ancestry – in May 2013. This sweet first family photo made them appear the image of happiness. However, the truth was, their work schedules kept them apart – as she left to shoot. Witches of the East in Canada in early July of that year – and being “partnerless” took its toll.
“I had to travel with her and at the time Chan wasn’t available to be with us most of the time,” Dewan said because his movie took him from London to Chicago all summer long. . “So it was me, my doula and Evie traveling alone at six weeks old.”
Dewan was to follow a production schedule in addition to Evie’s eating and sleeping schedule.
“It was really difficult because [of the] long hours, “she said.” I had him on set with me all the time. It was just very difficult. “
Dewan said it had caused her to suffer from “a lot of postpartum anxiety,” explaining, “I never stopped. You wake up several times at night and work all day. I was breastfeeding. . I was without a partner. I mean it was just crazy. “
In April 2018, the couple announced their separation and she filed for divorce six months later. However, her grief was corrected when she regained love with Kazee, who she started dating in October. Dewan and Kazee announced they were waiting in 2019 – and Callum arrived in March 2020. Despite the pandemic, Dewan was in a completely different state of mind when her baby boy was born, saying she felt “so grounded. “.
“Even though the world was crazy, I was home and in this love nest and it was different,” she said of parenting with her first-time dad, Kazee.
Dewan recently revealed that she first met Kazee in 2012 when she saw him on Broadway in Once. She and her mom were so touched by her winning Tony performance that they walked out the stage after the show. Dewan said this was where she and Kazee shared “one of those eye-catching moments.”
She said it was “very quick, but it hit us both. It was a while. My mom and I told him how great he did a job and how great it was. so amazing show, and that was it. We both left in the night. But I never forgot the moment. “
And neither did he, she said. “Many years later we were in different situations. I was single again, he was single,” she recalls. “He texted me and said something like, ‘Hey, I don’t know if you remember me, but how are you?’ And I was floored. Of course I remembered him. And that moment in 2012. “
Dewan and Tatum, 41, had some difficulty early in their co-parenting process, but reconciled.
Tatum took out the book Sparkella earlier this year, inspired by Everly and it became a bestseller. When he divorced Dewan in 2018, he said he was “very scared” of being a single dad and “of connecting with Everly in any way a little girl could want. I wasn’t wearing it. of nail polish nor knew how to braid hair. ” He started having fun, making Everly happy, and having fun in the process.
In a recent Instagram post, he called their daughter “everything” – “my world and my heart”.
