Jennifer Carpenter makes her comeback as Deborah Morgan in limited series Dexter: new blood where she reprized the role of Dark Passenger from her brother in the first episode. The sequel to the series is slated to air on November 7.
What does this mean for Dexter’s (Michael C. Hall) late father Harry (James Remar), who was the original voice in the serial killer’s head?
“I love the concept of the Dark Passenger and being invited into Dexter’s psyche,” Carpenter revealed during Showtime’s TCA presentation for the drama. “Sometimes I feel like the black passenger and the passenger are almost directly behind the wheel and it was an opportunity not to be an angel or a devil on his shoulder, but to steer the steering wheel to the left or the right against his will. And to manipulate him, to navigate him, to abuse him, to save him. I felt like it was something completely different from some kind of phantom entity.

Adds Halls, “Harry was like Dexter’s north star in his constant point of view as Deb, in the context of this world, came from all over. In this, she’s an internalized character for Dexter who represents how far he’s come or how far he’s fallen – wobbling inwardly and without a compass in a sense as much as he would like to have one.
Showrunner Clyde Phillips said Deb is “more than the black passenger.”
“She represents a corner of Dexter’s mind that we all have in our heads that says, ‘Well wait a minute, if you do that then there will be consequences. “If you notice at the very beginning of the show when we introduce Deb, it’s very calm and it’s very calm. They’re talking about how he’s the one who chose this place. They’re seated at the table and Deb has the head down and Dexter almost touches her but he can’t because she’s part of him.
Showtime also revealed a first look at series newcomer Jack Alcott, who stars as Dexter’s son Harrison Morgan. At the premiere, Harrison has reunited with his father in sleepy New York City and wants his life back.
“We sat down and figured out what we were going to do and quickly decided on the theme of fathers and sons,” Phillips said. “You can’t do a show on Dexter without bringing back your son, whom he left when he was 5 years old. His son thinks he is dead but finds him alive and he is resentful. Dexter will have a lot of work to do to win his son back and prove he’s a good dad and I think we’ll get there.
Executive Producer Scott Reynolds adds, “This relates to the other parts of the season’s theme – the sins of the father and how those things are passed down to our children. There is a lot of support there.
Phillips says the title of New blood doesn’t necessarily mean Harrison is new blood, “it’s the fact that almost a decade has passed since the Season 8 finale and we want to recognize them.”
