“Danger!” Champion Ken Jennings took to the defense of his podcast co-host, John Roderick, after he suffered a backlash for telling a story about his daughter that readers equated to child abuse.
Jennings, who was selected to be the popular game show’s first guest host following the death of longtime host Alex Trebek, hosts a podcast called “Omnibus” alongside Roderick. Together, the duo unbox strange true stories in an effort to create a kind of time capsule for future generations.
Over the weekend, Roderick shared a long story on Twitter about parenting her 9-year-old daughter when she mentioned she was hungry. Instead of getting her food, he asked her to bake some baked beans. This task required the use of a can opener, which she did not know how to use. Roderick says he took the opportunity as a “teaching moment” and, after six hours of struggle, she managed to figure it out.
Readers, however, were quick to call the podcast’s host for failing to feed her hungry child for six hours.

“If that reassures anyone, I personally know that John is (a) a loving and caring dad who (b) tells strong-impacting stories about his own irritability on ten podcasts a week. This site is so stupid, ” Jennings wrote Sunday to his followers on Twitter.
However, the controversy led users to peruse Roderick’s profile and come up with tweets that many deemed anti-Semitic, homophobic or racist. Eventually, Jennings responded to those who asked about the tweets discovered.
“There is no axis where an anti-Semitic screenshot represents a real opinion that I have never heard from him,” he said in response to a person.

“Yeah, you’re playing a dumb game for dummies. You can also find long, thoughtful Twitter threads of John talking about serious anti-Semitism left and right,” he said in another tweet to a reviewer. “Is it any less fun than finding an answer in 2013 where he talks to a friend with a ‘conspiracy theory’ type voice?”
Roderick deleted his account in response to the backlash.
Previously, he had commented on the reception his daughter’s story had received online, calling it “amazing.”
