Jerod Mayo joins the Patriots' coaches

Reports indicate that Mayo will work with linebackers, which makes sense given that he is often considered a field coach when he held this position from 2008 to 2015 in New England, at such point that some of his teammates jokingly called him "Little Bill."

Mayo will work under new defensive coordinator Greg Schiano, who replaced the late Brian Flores. Flores left his post to become head coach in Miami. Coach Josh Boyer's half-corners is attached to him. The defensive line coach, Brendan Daly, also left the organization, choosing to join the Kansas City staff.

Having a former player as experienced as Mayo with Patriots' defense should help reduce coach losses on that side of the ball.

In addition to Mayo, the Boston Herald announced that Bob Fraser had also been added to the Patriots' staff. Fraser was Schiano's assistant from 2006 to 2011 at Rutgers and coached Schiano's linebackers in Tampa from 2012 to 2013.
