Jerrie Cobb She is NASA's first female candidate astronaut, having passed the astronaut tests in 1961. In total, 13 women have passed the difficult physical tests and have become known as Mercury 13, a reference to Mercury astronauts 7 who were all men. None of the 13 women has reached the space. A gifted pilot, she has set numerous world records and was the first woman to fly at the Paris Air Show. She spent most of her career performing humanitarian missions in the Amazon jungle. Cobb has been a lifelong advocate for women flying in space and attempted to be part of the Discovery Shuttle in 1998 with 77-year-old John Glenn, who participated in this mission.
