Jessica Springsteen, daughter of New Jersey musician and icon Bruce Springsteen, won a silver medal with the U.S. show jumping team at the 2021 Olympics after falling to Sweden in a fierce play-off on Saturday night in Tokyo.
It was the 29-year-old’s first Olympic medal in his debut and the US team’s second consecutive silver medal. The Americans now have a record 10 medals in this event.
Riding Don Juan Van de Donkhoeve, a 12-year-old Belgian Warmblood stallion, Springsteen incurred four of the US team’s eight fouls in the final to bring them to a play-off with Sweden.
All six riders had clear runs, but Sweden’s total time of 122.90 seconds edged the Americans by just 1.3 seconds to win gold.
“I was disappointed to have all four flaws,” Springsteen told reporters, according to The Guardian. “I was taking it for granted, I didn’t really expect this to be one of my challenges. I am therefore disappointed in this regard. But I found that my horse jumped the rest of the course absolutely beautifully and, I was just thinking about that left turn over there, I want it to be right in my time so, I think that’s why I was going there. knocked down but overall he’s been amazing all week so I’m so happy with him.

Springsteen, Kraut and Ward each moved cleanly through the shortened play-off course in a combined time of 124.2 seconds.

Springsteen, who is also the daughter of Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Patti Scialfa, grew up on the family’s horse farm in Colts Neck, New Jersey.
E Street Band guitarist Stevie Van Zandt tweeted a storm during Springsteen’s money run.

Springsteen is currently the best placed woman in the International Federation of Equestrian Sports World Rankings (14th). After being a substitute for the London Olympics in 2012, Springsteen failed to qualify for Rio in 2016.
