An angry man and his wife for not observing the correct wearing of face masks were kicked off a flight from Fort Lauderdale to San Diego after yelling at flight attendants before take off, JetBlue said.
In a video widely shared on social media, a man was caught yelling at a flight attendant in the middle of the plane’s aisle as he was told to get out of the plane so as not to carry face mask. According to the airline, the couple were questioned “on several occasions but would not comply with the federal mandate on the masks”.
As the video progressed, the man can be heard claiming that he received a warning.
“I am a vaccinated person,” he said in the video. “I follow all your rules. All of them, I respect your rules. OKAY? You gave me a fucking warning. “
JetBlue said the man “became verbally and physically aggressive towards the crew members before finally exiting the plane.” He was seen in the video asking the flight attendant to turn around to “face everyone” as he walked towards the employee while pointing his finger.
Another flight attendant then pulled the man from behind and guided him to the exit, eliciting cheers from the passengers. According to the airline, the couple have been barred from using their services in the future. Their names were not disclosed.
“For reference, crew members are trained to talk to customers who violate policies,” JetBlue said in a statement. “If a customer refuses to wear a face shield after being invited, the crew members will endeavor to defuse the situation to the best of their ability to achieve compliance prior to removal. The safety of every guest and crew member is our top priority, and we must work together to follow the federal mandate of the mask while traveling. “
Face masks are still required during travel in or to and from the United States, according to current guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. They are also required inside the airports themselves or at other transport stations.
The Federal Airline Administration in January announced tougher penalties for those who threaten, intimidate or interfere with crew members because of an increase in unruly behavior this year.
“I signed an order directing safety inspectors and FAA attorneys to take legal action against any passenger who assaults, threatens, intimidates or interferes with airline crew members,” said FAA administrator Steve Dickson in a PSA video message in January. “We will not address these cases through warnings or advice.”
The FAA can impose criminal fines and, in some cases, jail passengers who disrupt flights or do not follow crew instructions, in violation of FAA rules, the agency said.
It is not known what punishment, if any, the passenger will face.
