Jets coach Adam Gase blames himself for the start of LB's end-of-season injury

The New York Jets were hit Friday by the news that linebacker Avery Williamson had torn his ACL in a preseason game.

All major pre-season injuries are hard, but what made Williamson's injury even more unfortunate was that he was playing while all the other Jets starters had been removed from the match.

At a time when virtually any departing player is out of the field before the end of the first quarter, if he plays the first two weeks of preseason, Williamson played late in the second quarter against the Atlanta Falcons.

Jets coach, Adam Gase, released a rare NFL head coach, Mea Culpa, about the situation on Sunday, saying he regretted that Williamson finds himself in this situation.

Adam Gase laments and explains the injury of Avery Williamson

From Rich Cimini of ESPN:

"Looking back – the decline is at 20/20 – I would have liked to be able to get it out of there a series earlier," Gase said. "I spoke to him, it's about me, it's me who have to make this call and get him out of there. We did not do it.It's a shame because he had a good camp. "

For Cimini, Gase explained that Williamson was still playing because his staff wanted to see him play next to substitute Neville Hewitt, ironically in case C.J. Mosley was injured. By signing Mosley this off season brought Williamson to mediocre ILB position, so the staff wanted to try different combinations of inner linebackers.

Williamson played an important role in defending the Jets last season in his first year with the team after leaving the Titans of Tennessee. The 27-year-old scored 120 tackles, three sacks and six passovers.

Gase justifies Le'Veon Bell's preseason position

Gase also announced Sunday that middle distance star Le'Veon Bell will not be thrilled this season. He would have admitted the decision to detain Bell and the circumstances of Willamson's injury were not unrelated.

"I was 99.9% sure of what we were going to do," Gase said, according to ESPN. "The [Williamson injury] probably made 100. "

Bell did not seem too taken aback by this decision, tweeting emojis to fans hours later.

Obviously, Bell, who does not know the games to avoid injury, will make his debut with the Jets in the first week against the Buffalo Bills.
