The Jets sacked general manager Mike Maccagnan Wednesday morning, the team said.
Head Coach Adam Gase appears to be the beneficiary for the moment as he has been awarded the GM Acting title, while the Jets are looking for a full-time replacement.
"Mike has been instrumental in realizing the organization's strategic vision over the last four seasons and especially the past few months," said President and CEO Christopher Johnson in a statement. "However, I made the decision to make a change after a long reflection and a careful assessment of what would be in the best long-term interest of the New York Jets.
"I will immediately start looking for our new General Manager. In the meantime, Coach Gase will be acting director general. I would like to thank Mike for the time and effort he has devoted to his term and I wish only the best for him and his wife Betty. "
Johnson's research could lead him to Eagles Vice President of Personnel Joe Douglas. ESPN.com reported that Douglas is the early favorite for the post and is close to Gase.
There were rumors of a quarrel between him and Gase around the project. Brian Costello, from the post office, said the two did not agree on the amount to be offered to free agent broker Le'Veon Bell.
"I do not know who decides to publish this information," Gase said last week about the rumors. "It pisses me off a bit. We have discussions on everything. This is our job. We have to work with so many things. That's what we have to do. That's all we've done since arriving here.
"Since we started, we've been communicating consistently, whether it's coming to my office or me, but all we're trying to do is make sure we're always on the same page. We try to gather everything we can in a short time. "
Maccagnan, who was two years old on his contract, was able to write the quarterback of the Jets franchise at Sam Darnold a year ago, but his CV has many other drafts. Still, Maccagnan survived the dismissal of head coach Todd Bowles, which took place just after the season and was part of the group that chose Gase as a substitute.
Maccagnan and Bowles started with the Jets before the 2015 season.
The Jets also sacked the vice-president of player staff, Brian Heimerdinger.
