The Jets have their man.
The team agreed to meet with Eagles vice president of staff, Joe Douglas, as the new general manager, the team announced Friday night.
Douglas spent the last three years with the Eagles, helping to form a formation that won the Super Bowl LII. He replaces Mike Maccagnan, who was surprisingly fired on May 15 after four years of work.
Jets CEO and President, Christopher Johnson, has chosen Douglas instead of Bears' Assistant Director of Staff, Champ Kelly, Scott Fitterer, Co-Director of the Seahawks' Staff, and Saints' Warden of Supervision Terry Fontenot. who were all interviewed.
Douglas had been considered the favorite to land Jets' job even before Maccagnan was fired. Rumors circulated at the time of the NFL's writing in April that the Jets were considering firing Maccagnan and Douglas's name was quickly introduced as a replacement because of his relationship with the new head coach. Another factor X that could have worried some candidates is the return of Woody Johnson. Johnson is currently United States ambassador to the United Kingdom, but he could return after the 2020 presidential election if Donald Trump lost or choose to return alone, even if Trump wins. Johnson took the position in 2017, leaving his brother Christopher at the helm of the team.
While Woody Johnson is surely kept informed of the evolution of the Jets, it was a hiring of Christopher Johnson. A new CEO would be right to fear having a new boss in 18 months.
GM's research was led by Johnson with Gase and team vice president, Hymie Elhai. They interviewed the candidates last weekend. Fitterer has maintained with May 31, Fontenot on June 1, Douglas on Sunday and Kelly on Monday. They conducted a second interview Tuesday on the phone. The Vikings general manager, George Paton, rejected the team's request for interview. This is the third time that Paton is talking to Jets about their work at GM, having already done so in 2013 and 2015.
