Are we sure that Sam Darnold is the only member of the Jets offensive with the mono?
The offense seemed lethargic, sleepy and sick with his starter watching his home Monday night. He could barely work and the Jets fell to 0-2 after a 23-3 loss to the Browns. It was the seventh consecutive loss of the home Jets, dating back to last year.
The news has been getting worse for the Jets. Second quarterback Trevor Siemian left the game in the second quarter with what appeared to be a terrible ankle injury. He was replaced by Luke Falk, who left the team on Monday afternoon.
One could expect some difficulties in attacking with Darnold put away after the diagnosis of mononucleosis and the losing team leaving receiver Quincy Enunwa last week. But the Jets were embarrassing for most of them at the MetLife stadium. They had -13 net yards in the first period as Siemian and Falk struggled to complete their passes.
The Jets used a high dose of Le'Veon Bell, who had 68 rushing yards in 21 carries and 10 catches for 61 yards.
Falk played better in the second half, but the Jets' offense still has not reached the end zone. Falk scored 20 passes on 25 passes for 198 yards. Siemian was 3-of-6 for 3 yards.
The offensive line was abominable. Left tackle Kelvin Beachum was awarded two penalties, a hands penalty in the face during a fourth dive and three Browns bags in front of linebacker Myles Garrett. Garrett is the one who hurt Siemian on a dirty blow. He crushed Siemian near the sideline of the Jets and was accused of mistreating the smuggler. The quarterback's left ankle has bent unnaturally and is missing for the remainder of the game.
Falk entered the game under the applause of "Luuuuuke". The former Washington State star was the fourth quarterback of the Jets to enter the training camp. He sent Robby Anderson a good 36-yard pass in the third quarter, but the coach crashed at Cleveland 11 after the Jets grabbed the goal.
In the next game, Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield defeated former Giants star Odell Beckham Jr. to score 23-3.
The Jets' defense had played pretty well before giving up Beckham's long touch. But you knew Beckham would have fun at some point, especially after Jets defensive coordinator Gregg Williams grabbed the bear on Friday and asked if Beckham was a dynamic player. These comments seemed stupid at the time and even worse when Beckham cut his defense for a long score. Beckham had six catches for 161 yards and TD.
The Browns seemed to want to move the ball quickly. Mayfield had 27 passes and 33 yards in the first round. Beckham managed a one-handed pass against Nate Hairston, the surprising striker at cornerback Trumaine Johnson on the bench. It was unclear why Johnson had been benched.
Cleveland reached the 4-yard line of the Jets, but was unable to enter. The Jets held up well and the Browns had to settle for a 23-yard field goal by Austin Seibert. Seibert scored 6-0 later in the quarter with a 48-yard field goal.
While the defense was offering a few stops, the offense was completely destroyed. He had 7 total yards in the first quarter.
Nick Chubb scored a touchdown for the Browns, while he remained 19 minutes at 10:23 in the second quarter. The Jets should have been offside, but Hairston was called for dropping a fourth Mayfield attempt. .
When Siemian came out of the match with 7:47 to go in the half, the Jets seemed to be pulling around Falk a bit. Jets coach Adam Gase started giving the ball to Bell and moved it until 28th Brown.
New kicker Sam Ficken scored a 46-yard goal with 2:56 left in the half that drew the most cheer of the night to register 16-3 before half-time. Jets fans desperately needed to be encouraged.
Now, the Jets have a short week to prepare for the Patriots on Sunday. New England beat their first two opponents 76-3, so the Jets are going to be big underdogs to say it nicely. They must also determine if Falk will be the starting quarterback or they will try to recruit someone or change jobs. Darnold is not expected for at least three weeks and Siemian's injury seems very serious.
