New York Jets safety Marcus Maye faces multiple charges after an arrest for impaired driving following a car accident he was involved in in February in Florida, according to ESPN.

Maye was arrested on February 22 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and charged with impaired driving, damage to property and people and leaving the scene of an accident, according to the report. Maye has posted bail and is due to return in a digital hearing later this month.

The NFL and the Jets, who apparently weren’t aware of the arrest until this week, are looking into the incident.

“This is an ongoing legal issue and our attorney has advised us that we cannot comment,” Maye’s agent told ESPN. “We are confident this will be resolved in a positive way. We look forward to Marcus returning to the pitch soon.”

Maye, according to the report, was driving alone on February 22 when he crashed in the back of another car at around 7:30 p.m. The crash did not injure anyone, although the driver of the other car brought a civil action. against Maye and claims over $ 30,000 in damages.

Maye was reportedly ‘callous’ and ‘moving side to side’ when approached by officers – who allegedly found him in his car north of where the crash took place – according to the New York Post, and “seemed to ignore what was going on. An officer said in a police report that he saw vomit on the driver’s side door of Maye’s car and could smell alcohol on his breath.

Maye reportedly refused to give officers a breath sample at the scene and was arrested.

Maye, 28, recorded 23 total tackles and had one sack so far this season with the Jets. He missed their 27-24 overtime win over the Tennessee Titans last week with an ankle injury, which should put him on the sidelines for about a month.

The former Florida star had a career-high 88 tackles and two interceptions last season with the Jets. He signed a one-year, $ 10.6 million contract with the team ahead of the season.
