Jets QB Darnold excluded indefinitely with mono

New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold, Sam Darnold, will be out of the limelight after the diagnosis of mononucleosis, coach Adam Gase announced Thursday.

Trevor Siemian will start Monday night against the Cleveland Browns.

Gase hinted that Darnold might miss several weeks. The coach suggested that the return as soon as possible be the fifth week at the Philadelphia Eagles, following the end of Week 4 of the Jets. They play New England Patriots in the third week.

"I do not want to put any prediction on anything," said Gase, questioned on a specific timetable for Darnold's return. "I'm just glad we have the week off when we do it."

Dowell Loggains, the team coach and coach of the quarterbacks, announced the news in Darnold on Wednesday night.

Darnold did not train on Wednesday because of what the team called strep throat. He has already lost weight because of mono, said Gase.

Luke Falk will serve as backup quarterback of the Jets while Siemian will be the starter.

Gase also announced that the attacking midfielder The Vein Bell would undergo an MRI Thursday on his shoulder and miss training.

The Browns were favored by 2.5 points against the Jets at Caesars Sportsbook before the announcement of Darnold. The game is now off the board.
