Jets quarterback Trevor Siemian, ankle injury for a year

Jets coach Adam Gase announced Tuesday that quarterback Trevor Siemian would need surgery on his ankle and the third, Luke Falk, would be the starter of the team until Sam Darnold returns from his fight against mononucleosis.

Siemian, who signed a one-year contract with the Jets at the end of the season after 25 career starts with the Broncos, had a disastrous start to the 23-3 loss to the Browns on Monday night, when of which he managed only 3 out of 6 passes for six yards and left the game in the middle of the second quarter, following a foul by Myles Garrett. When Siemian fell to the ground, his left leg was bent back, damaging the ligaments.

"It's a nasty game," said Gase. "I think surgery will take a lot of damage and it will be time for him to recover."

Falk, who has played in his first regular season with Soulian, has completed 20 of 25 passes for 198 yards and will begin his career Sunday in New England.

Gase said the team had not yet decided who would be chosen to support Falk, a sixth-round pick in 2018, which the Titans and Jaguars had given up. The coach had no updates on the timing of Darnold's return.

"We'll really have a better idea when the doctors give us the green light for it to progress," Gase said about Darnold. "He was in the building today. He feels better. The doctors let us know when to proceed with him.

Gase also said linebacker Jordan Jenkins will be week by week (calf), alongside Demaryius Thomas (hamstring / knee).
