Jets receiver depth, Keelan Cole in the air before opening

The Jets could lose two wide receivers on Sunday to the Panthers when their 2021 season kicks off. Jamison Crowder, the team’s main receiver for the past two years, has been ruled out, as expected, and the newcomer Keelan Cole is questionable after not training on Friday.

Crowder is still on the reserve / COVID-19 list after testing positive for the virus last Friday, while Cole injured his knee in training Thursday and was limited that day.

“It’s going to go all the way,” head coach Robert Saleh said of Cole.

That could mean an increased role for sophomore Denzel Mims, who started slowly in training camp but picked it up over the summer.

“He’s improved a lot and he keeps getting better every day and I love his intention and the way he does business, finding versatility and knowing every place instead of stagnating at just one, which is tough for a receiver, “Saleh said.” So he’s been right, his mind is in the right place. “

The addition of free agent Corey Davis and rookie second-round pick Elijah Moore are expected to start as wide receiver.

Saleh declined to reveal who will start at cornerback alongside Bryce Hall, but it’s obvious Hall has impressed the coaching staff. Saleh is full of praise for the second-year defensive back’s work habits, consistency and football IQ.

“He’ll be able to make plays and he won’t make you beat,” Saleh said. “We hope he will be able to make sure that the ball does not go behind him and that he is constantly challenging the things that are in front of him.”

As part of what Saleh said is a Friday tradition, he did not wear Jets gear on the podium for his press conference. Instead, he donned a gray shirt with a blue and white Bulldog mascot, representing the Passaic County Technical Institute. Every Friday Saleh plans to wear a different high school shirt.

“The girls are the first college flag football team in New Jersey history to win a championship,” he said. “We’re going to reward a local high school football team every week for doing something pretty cool. So, they are the first.

Safety Sharrod Neasman (hamstring) has been ruled out and running back La’Mical Perine (foot) is questionable. Perine trained hard for the first time this week, Friday. Neaman’s absence leaves the Jets with only three active safeties: Marcus Maye, Lamarcus Joyner and Sheldrick Redwine. They can add training team safety, Saleh said.

The Jets have signed offensive lineman Ross Pierschbacher to the practice squad. Washington’s fifth-round pick in 2019, the former Alabama lineman was in training camp this year with the Eagles.
