The Jets are set to part ways with coach Adam Gase after Sunday’s final against the Patriots, sources say, sparking a search the NFL world has believed was inevitable.
Candidates who should be considered include Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bienemy, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus, Ravens defensive coordinator Don “Wink” Martindale, Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and Rams defensive coordinator. Brandon Staley to college coaches such as Matt from Iowa State Campbell, Jim Harbaugh from Michigan and Dan Mullen from Florida to everyone.
Expect a long, in-depth search.
Gase is 9-22 over two seasons, including two consecutive wins after a 0-13 start amid a string of injuries and other issues this season. New coach and general manager Joe Douglas – who is not going anywhere – will have the second pick. The decision to stay with 23-year-old Sam Darnold or select a second-place QB will be a collaborative decision that will include the thoughts of the coach.
Gase likely would have been fired after last week’s game if the Jets had lost, which would give them a boost in their search. Instead, the Jets had a second straight surprise – beating the Browns, 23-16, a week after beating the Rams, 23-20, in Los Angeles – that sealed the No.1 pick for the Jaguars at the place.
Bienemy, 51, has had multiple interviews with the head coach in each of the past cycles and has garnered strong public approval from Chiefs coach Andy Reid, among others. Eberflus, 50, is widely respected for the strength and discipline of his teams. Martindale, 57, had a great interview last year for the Giants job which went to Joe Judge. Smith, 38, is expected to be one of the hottest candidates this cycle and will likely be up for grabs for every job. Staley, 38, is another up-and-coming player who excelled in his first year leading the Rams defense.
Jet owner Woody Johnson – still US ambassador to the UK and not with the team – has long been intrigued by Harbaugh, 57, who is exploring through intermediaries a potential return to the NFL. However, Harbaugh’s name is not considered on the front burner at this time, according to the sources.
Before hiring Gase two years ago, the Jets asked to interview Campbell, 41, who declined. He remains a possible target for NFL teams, although it is unclear how willing he is to accept such a move. Mullen, 48, has a wealth of quarterback development background including Alex Smith in Utah, Dak Prescott in Mississippi State and Kyle Trask in Florida.
