The New York Jets were sacked Wednesday by general manager Mike Maccagnan. Coach Adam Gase will be acting chief executive while an immediate replacement search begins, said CEO Christopher Johnson in a statement.
The Jets also sacked the vice-president of player staff, Brian Heimerdinger, sources told Adam Schefter, of ESPN, and Jeff Darlington.
"Mike has helped to materialize the organization's strategic vision over the past four seasons and especially the past few months," Johnson said in a statement. "However, I made the decision to make a change after a long reflection and a careful assessment of what would be in the best long-term interest of the New York Jets."

The upheaval comes as reports point to internal discord within the organization. During the project, ESPN reported that friction was developed between Maccagnan and Gase because of disagreements over staff in times of free competition.
The two men denied the disagreement that had arisen in their relationship, but sources said Johnson was so worried that he began spending more time in the Jets' premises to monitor the relationship between Gase and Maccagnan.
The Jets scored 10-6 in their first season under the orders of Maccagnan and former coach Todd Bowles in 2015, but the team has experienced three consecutive difficulties since. Bowles was fired after registering a 4-12 record last season.
Maccagnan played an important role in hiring Gase. That's why the timing of Wednesday's move is shocking.
Johnson gave Maccagnan the means to spend more than $ 125 million in guaranteed free cash and then let him use choice # 3 in the repechage on defensive tackle Quinnen Williams.
The team also formed a promising core of young players, including quarterback Sam Darnold, safety chief Jamal Adams and defensive lineman Leonard Williams.
The Jets are one of eight teams to have recruited several Pro Bowlers in the first round since 2015 (Adams and Williams), but they also missed second-round picks Christian Hackenberg (2016) and Devin Smith (2015) under Maccagnan .
The Philadelphia Eagles executive, Joe Douglas, who has ties to Gase, could be a prime candidate for the position of general manager.
Before joining the Jets, Maccagnan spent 14 seasons with the Houston Texans.
