Jim Irsay joked that he would sit by his fax machine in anticipation.
But just in case Andrew Luck doesn’t walk through that door, you can bet the Indianapolis Colts owner has a few other names on his mind when it comes to his team’s next quarterback.
Luck abruptly retired after the 2019 season, but is still revered across the organization. If the 31-year-old wanted to make a comeback to the NFL, Irsay said the door was open. But in the unlikely event that does occur, Indianapolis is looking for someone with “veteran vision” to replace Philip Rivers.
“We are convinced that we are close, that we have a great core of players who can compete for the Super Bowl very soon,” Irsay told reporters. “Ideally, if you can bring in someone this year who is ready to go, that gives you the best opportunity.”
The Colts are 11-5 and have made the playoffs under second-year coach Frank Reich. The offensive line has improved dramatically since Luck retired two years ago, so maybe there is a temptation. Irsay left the door wide open.
“He knows how much we would love him to be our quarterback, there’s no question about it,” Irsay said.
But if that’s not luck, expect the Colts to be one of the many teams interested in Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford.
As Detroit heads for a rebuild, the 33-year-old will be making a fresh start. Stafford had 4,084 passing yards and 26 TD passes in 2020.
ESPN radio host John Clayton said Colts would be one of his favorite destinations.
“Indianapolis. It’s the team from what I take that Matthew Stafford likes, ”Clayton said Wednesday. “He loves her better than any other.
“So I think he’s kind of on the same spirit as Jim Irsay and knows Jacob Eason as well, because they both have roots in Georgia. Not as far as Stafford grew up, but I think right now your worry is that Carolina is going to make a big offer? I do not know if they will give up the 8th pick in the draft. Washington has the 19th pick in the first round, and they’ll be in the offer. San Francisco will be part of the auction. “
