Jim Leavelle, the Dallas jurist captured in one of the most iconic photographs in history, died at age 99, according to ABC News.

The picture shows Leavelle, in light-colored attire, escorting the assassin of President John F. Kennedy, Lee Harvey Oswald, while he was shot.

Leavelle is seen in the picture with his hand on Oswald. His reaction is captured while the owner of a nightclub, Jack Ruby, shot Oswald at close range on live television.

The photo was taken shortly after the Kennedy assassination on November 22, 1963.

Leavelle's daughter, Tanya Evers, told The Associated Press that her father had died Thursday in Colorado.

He had a broken hip at the beginning of the week and responded well, but then suffered a heart attack.

Leavelle spoke in schools for decades after the assassination, telling her story.

He never believed in the existence of conspiracy theories concerning JFK's death.

Leavelle said that he had tried to shake Oswald behind him to protect him from injuries when he had seen Jack Ruby approaching.

Instead, he simply turned Oswald's body and the ball fell to the left of his belly button instead of his dead spot.

The photo was taken by Pulitzer Prize winner Robert H. Jackson.
