Former President Jimmy Carter became Friday the longest-standing president of US history, thus marking his name of another milestone, as he pursues a rich life post-presidential spanning almost four decades.

On Friday, Carter, the 39th president of the nation, reached the age of 94 and 172 days, giving him one more day than former President George Bush when he died in November.

The record comes more than three years after Carter announced that he would receive treatment for cancer discovered in his brain.

"I am perfectly comfortable with everything that comes," Carter said at the time, in August 2015; four months later, he stated that he had no cancer.

In a statement Friday morning, a spokeswoman for the Carter Center, an Atlanta-based nonprofit, that Mr. Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, founded in 1982, said the former president had done less long trips than before. But spokeswoman Deanna Congileo said Carter "continues to be committed to the causes and activities that have marked his post-presidency."

"He provides vision and assistance to Carter Center programs on world peace and health, participates in Habitat for Humanity construction one week a year, gives school lessons." Sunday in his hometown, Plains, Georgia, teaches at Emory University, and much more "says Congileo.

"He and Mrs. Carter are walking around, and they have been following a healthy diet throughout their lives," she continued. "The President and Mrs. Carter are both determined to use their influence as long as possible to improve the world. Their tireless resolve and heart have helped improve the lives of millions of the world's poorest people. "

Carter, a Democrat born on October 1, 1924, had promised to heal the country after Watergate for one more term, but his chances of reelection would be compromised by a miserable economy and a hostage crisis. But while many members of both parties consider Mr. Carter to be a disappointment as president, they generally regard him as a former model president. Carter had the longest post-presidency in US history after he left the White House in 1981.

In addition to the activities listed by Ms. Congileo, Mr. Carter intimately shared the details of his story in a series of books. distributed hyper-specific tips on diet, exercise and the fundamentals of a rewarding life; and guided the Carter Center to a series of public health achievements.
