Carter, age 94, told people gathered at the church in Plains, Georgia, that he was receiving nursing care with his wife, Rosalyn, at his home and that he was recovering well, according to the Associated Press. He thanked the people present for their wishes of happiness.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution noted that a group of people had wrapped around the church before the start of its scheduled teaching at 10 am.

Carter said during his teaching that he had recently sent a letter to Trump in which he explained how Carter was dealing with Japan and China when he was at the White House. Carter stated that Trump had responded by calling him.

"He was very kind," Carter said. "The main purpose of his appeal was to tell me quite frankly, on a private line, that the Chinese far outstripped the United States in many ways."

In May, Carter had broken his hip at home in Georgia while he was out hunting turkey. He underwent hip arthroplasty only days after the accident.

The former first lady, Rosalyn Carter, was hospitalized at about the same time for what Jimmy Carter had initially thought was a stroke, AP noted. His condition has proven to be less serious.

The Carter Center had said during Jimmy Carter's operation that the former president would be taking physical therapy.
