Monday’s “Tonight Show” has on average the smallest TV audience ever for an original episode of the show, according to Early Notes. Jimmy Fallon only attracted 947,000 total viewers last night.

Stephen Colbert’s “Late Show” on CBS won the night with 2.03 million viewers, according to the national quick numbers of Nielsen Live + Same Day. ABC’s “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” came in second in late night television programming with 1.67 million total viewers.

Figures for each of these shows are subject to adjustment when final figures are calculated. These should be available on Wednesday.

While this specific historical data for Nielsen only dates back to 1986, it’s safe to say that Johnny Carson has always attracted over a million viewers. These are very different times. (Carson hosted “The Tonight Show” from 1962 to 1992. Jay Leno took over in 1992.)

The previous low for an original episode of “The Tonight Show” came on September 25, 2020, when Fallon drew 992,000 total viewers after a Stanley Cup Final game. The start of this episode has been delayed a bit due to the live hockey coverage.

Prior to the post-hockey episode, the show’s lowest record came from the August 18, 2020 episode, when Jimmy drew a total of 1 million viewers.

Yeah, it’s been a tough time for Fallon – especially amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Fallon was the late night king, but Colbert first passed him in mid-November 2018. The “Colbert Report” alum has won this season.

On Monday, Fallon hosted guests Bill Burr, Rashida Jones and musical guest Old Dominion. Segments include “Life Coach” with Burr and Fallon’s solo gag “Go On, Git”.

Last night Colbert interviewed Chris Rock and aired a performance by singer Joss Stone. On “Kimmel,” the guests were CNN’s “This Is Us Star” Milo Ventimiglia and Jake Tapper, with Queen Naija as musical guest.

Readers can watch Fallon’s Monday Monologue below. Up front, Fallon addressed President Trump who was permanently banned from Twitter and other social media platforms.
