Jimmy Garoppolo could be headed for Patriots return to mid-NFL quarterback

The impending NFL quarterback reshuffle could end up bringing Jimmy Garoppolo back to the New England Patriots, according to some reports.

There appear to be major changes coming for a number of teams after Matthew Stafford reportedly called for a trade with the Detroit Lions and Deshaun Watson told the Houston Texans he wanted out. This will likely lead to changes, as both are expected to find new homes and Garoppolo could be on the move as well.

As NESN Stafford’s request for a trade has reportedly potentially freeing former New England replacement Tom Brady with the 49ers seen as one of Stafford’s main land contenders. While the San Francisco coaching staff and front office remained committed to Garoppolo, some insiders believe the team would pull the trigger on a deal for Stafford if it was within their grasp, freeing Garoppolo.

As the NESN Report noted, the appellant’s salary meant he likely wouldn’t be part of an exchange for Stafford, making him a candidate for removal.

“The former Patriots replacement could be included in a hypothetical package for Stafford, but his current contract (salary cap of $ 26.2 million hit in 2021, $ 27 million in 2022) makes him a far from low commercial candidate. to be ideal. However, this deal only includes $ 2.8 million in dead money, which means the Niners can cut it with a modest financial penalty, ”the report notes.

“If that happens, reuniting Garoppolo with Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels would be a smart move for the QB-needy Patriots, who traded the 29-year-old in San Francisco for a second-round pick in 2017.”

There had been reports that Belichick was very high on Garoppolo before he was traded. As ESPN reported in 2018, the Patriots coach met with team owner Robert Kraft to discuss their roadmap for the future, with Belichick being told that Garoppolo would not be part of the long-term plans for the team and they would trade it. The report claimed that the future Hall of Fame coach of the Patriots was “angry and demoralized” but responded to the request. New England will potentially be looking for a quarterback again, with Cam Newton’s contract after this season and Jarrett Stidham looking shaky during his time behind center last season.

It wasn’t clear if San Francisco would be able to strike the deal for Stafford who would kick off the quarterback carousel in the first place. As The Inquisitr reported, there would be a number of other teams that would be interested in him, including the Denver Broncos.
