Jimmy Garoppolo is just doing his job.
The 49ers quarterback has been led by Bill Belichick and knows his job as a quarterback is to execute the game plan put in place by the coaching staff. So when Garoppolo hears the criticism that he can’t attack defenses vertically or at the limit, he has a simple answer that comes from his NFL upbringing at Foxboro.
“No. I mean, I’m just going with the plan that’s given,” Garoppolo told reporters on Wednesday. “I think we’ve stretched them pretty well in different aspects, but whatever game is called, I’m going to go out there and run it.”
Garoppolo and the 49ers’ offense have been slow in their last two games. While it didn’t hurt them in a Week 2 win over the Philadelphia Eagles, falling into a 17-0 hole in Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers put the 49ers behind the eighth balloon.
But the veteran flagger doesn’t think he and coach Kyle Shanahan need to make any changes over the course of the week to get the attack off to a quicker start.
“Well, it has its own process too, and you don’t want to mess around with that too much,” Garoppolo said. “He’s had success with that in the past. So he sort of manages the openers. For us it’s more about trying to anticipate what we’re going to see. You do all that scouting and stuff. like that, but once you step out on Sunday you might get the look you envisioned, you might get something that you’ve never even talked about. And I think that’s just the balance of that as as players, we must be able to perform under any circumstances.

At 2-1, calls have already started for rookie quarterback Trey Lance to supplant Garoppolo as the 49ers’ starting quarterback.
But Shanahan has made it clear this week that Garoppolo is the 49ers starter.
“There is no quarterback fight right now,” Shanahan said. “We’re going with our starting quarterback. I think he’s playing really well. We’re happy that he is so Trey doesn’t get thrown into situations he has to do too soon. If he ever is. thrown in that I know Trey will take care of it and get better as he goes. But it’s a luxury that we don’t have to do this to Trey or our team so hopefully that we won’t have to. “
Garoppolo and the 49ers offense will look to get out of blocks faster on Sunday when the 49ers host the Seattle Seahawks.
