Jimmy Garoppolo may well open the door to a controversy over the quarterback job in San Francisco. The 27-year-old made a horrible outing in the 49ers' second preseason game against the Denver Broncos on Monday night.
He left the game in the first quarter with a quarterback rating of 0.0 after completing 1 of 6 passes for 0 yards and an interception on three orders. And he was lucky that his statistics do not look worse. One of his unfinished was almost removed for a second interception, but a defender of the Broncos has dropped the potential to take away.
Yes, it's only the pre-season. But often, the pre-season is the time when life is the easiest for the quarterback who reads simple covers of a defense that may be missing from some of his stars. In other words, Nick Mullens' hype is gaining momentum.
Garoppolo is returning from an injury to the ACL, which he suffered in September 2018. He finished the 2018 season with a completion percentage of 59.6%, 718 passing yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions in three games. Although he had an impressive start with the 49ers in 2017, when he had five wins in a team that had zero victory before the takeover of Garoppolo, his appearances in 2017 have not been so pretty.
So when he missed Monday Night Football, the fans started to panic.
