When you’re the starting quarterback for an NFL team and the team employing you lets it be known that they intend to draft a quarterback with a Top 5 pick in the NFL of that year, it’s only natural that you believe your time with this team is coming to an end sooner rather than later.
It was a reality Jimmy Garoppolo certainly thought of when the San Francisco 49ers selected Trey Lance with the No.3 overall pick this spring. Garoppolo could have asked for a trade elsewhere with Lance, the obvious successor to his current role as a starter. Instead, Garoppolo wanted to keep moving forward with the 49ers.
But that doesn’t mean the thought hasn’t crossed his mind.
“Oh, definitely,” Garoppolo said, via SI.com’s Albert Breer. “Especially when they first told me this, you started to imagine situations that are not even possible. It crossed my mind at one point. But I didn’t want to do this. I like to be here. I like people. I like the teammates who I am with. It’s kind of the place – I don’t mean this is where my career started, but as a newbie, this is where it was. These players, these teammates, I wouldn’t trade them for the world. I love these guys. “
Garoppolo’s legitimacy to find a job and his hefty salary after another injury-filled season may have been slim anyway. The 49ers have said they believe in Garoppolo as a player. That his record when he starts the games has been very productive. The issue with Garoppolo is due to availability due to missed games due to injury.
For now, Lance serves as a reserve option that would appear to have a higher cap than Nick Mullens and CJ Beathard have provided in recent seasons. Ultimately, that will be Lance’s job. But Garoppolo says he’s making the most of the present that’s in front of him with the 49ers.
