Whenever it seems the 49ers have put the Jimmy garoppolo just to rest, we need a different twist. GM John lynch recently made headlines saying there was “no doubt” that Garoppolo would be the team’s starter in 2021, but there is apparently some doubt after all. 
“Many in the league still expect Garoppolo to be available” during trade negotiations, writes Boston Globe’s Ben Volin. Garoppolo is one of the few players in the league to have a no-trade clause, so he would have to give his approval for any potential destination. Lynch’s comments still sounded a little hollow given the team reportedly asked for information on Matthew stafford before complaining about the asking price.
The Head Coach Kyle shanahan has also hesitated at various times over his commitment to Garoppolo. Whether he’s good enough to be their long-term starter, there are also questions about Jimmy G’s health issues, which Lynch recently acknowledged.
He played all 16 games of the 2019 NFC Championship season in San Francisco, but only played three in 2018 and only six last year. While his 49ers starter status is apparently not as frozen as we might have believed earlier this week, Volin says he believes the team “should be knocked down by a commercial offer” to move Garoppolo.
In his latest “ Football Morning in America ” column, NBC Sports’ Peter King wrote that if the 49ers could convince Garoppolo to give up his no-trade clause, he could see them go “ all in. ” Deshaun Watson. Just for fun, he threw up a few what-if business scenarios, including a fun one where the Vikings send Kirk cousins in San Francisco and the 49ers send Garoppolo to Houston in a three-team deal that ends with Watson in Minnesota. Obviously, Shanahan and Cousins have a long history stretching back to their time in Washington together.
If Garoppolo were ultimately to be traded, the Patriots should be seen as a potential contender given he was Bill Belichick which brought him to the league with a second-round pick in 2014.
