Here’s what Jimmy Garoppolo and Trey Lance did on Day 12 of the 49ers quarterback competition.
JIMMY GAROPPOLO
Completed just 14 of 24 attempted passes (58%), threw two interceptions and nearly threw a third which K’Waun Williams gave up. If Garoppolo continues to play like he did today, he will lose his starting position before the start of the season. He threw six touchdown passes and six interceptions in 12 days in the camp. Not good.
Here is the play by play of its Wednesday.
1. Complete a 15-yard play pass to Deebo Samuel, who beat Jason Verrett with a left-to-right dig route. Samuel was Garoppolo’s second reading. The offensive line gave him plenty of time to pitch.
2. Complete a screen pass behind the line of scrimmage to George Kittle, who ran 10 yards.
3. Knocked down a wide open Kyle Juszczyk on the right sideline. That pass looked exactly like the time Nick Mullens passed Juszczyk last season against the Philadelphia Eagles.
4. Completed a screen pass behind the line of scrimmage to Juszczyk, who ran 10 yards.
5. Complete a 5-yard pass to Kittle, who ran a stick road.
6. Complete a 10-yard pass to Mohamed Sanu, who beat Jimmie Ward with a left-to-right dig route.
7. Watched his first read, then threw away his second read too late, Jauan Jennings, and was almost intercepted by K’Waun Williams. Dr. Greenlaw also went looking for and knocked down Williams, who could have injured himself. Williams and Greenlaw were both in a better position to catch than Jennings.
8. Completed a 5 yard control pass to Trent Sherfield. Kittle was wide open in the field, but Garoppolo didn’t throw him.
9. Thrown an incomplete through pass to Brandon Aiyuk, who stepped over Emmanuel Moseley. The pass was low and it landed out of bounds.
10. Arik Armstead had his control pass rejected.
11. Complete a 9 yard pass to Kittle, who ran a scavenging route from right to left.
12. Thrown an incomplete pass to Mohamed Sanu, who drew a join line towards the back of the end zone, but could not put both feet in bounds when he caught the ball.
13. Scrambled to the left and threw the ball to the 3rd and goal of 5. Garoppolo did not play well in the red zone of the camp.
14. Thrown a precise pass to Aiyuk, who faded to the pylon on the 1st and 10th from the 20th, but Moseley interrupted the pitch.
15. Complete a 7-yard pass to Deebo Samuel on 3rd and 12th.
16. Completed a screen pass behind the line of scrimmage to Kittle, who ran 10 yards.
17. Feld the back shoulder to Samuel, and Verrett knocked him down.
18. Complete an 11-yard pass to Aiyuk, who beat Moseley with a loop course.
19. Double pumped and threw a pass that was knocked down on the line of scrimmage and intercepted by Dr. Greenlaw.
20. Passed a 10 yard pass to Aiyuk after being scored for a sack by DJ Jones.
21. Completed a 5 yard control pass to Trey Sermon.
22. Passed a 10 yard play pass to Kittle, who curled.
23. Rolled right and dropped the ball to Kittle, who ran for 8 yards.
24. Thrown a pass to Samuel, who ran a curling course, and was intercepted by Verrett. The bullet seemed to be traveling through the air in slow motion. There was nothing on it.
TREY LAUNCHES
Continued to play well against the second team defense and even got a rep with the starters. It’s impossible to know if he’s ready to start Week 1 as he still hasn’t thrown a pass against the first-team defense, but that should change soon, especially if Garoppolo continues his recent crisis (three picks during the last two workouts).
Here is Lance’s practice play by play.
1. Climbed in the middle for 10 meters. By the way, the second team’s offensive line is awful, and the second team’s defensive line is great.
2. Substituted Garoppolo on the offensive first team for a game and handed the ball to Trey Sermon. The play was a zone reading.
3. Jamming to the left for 10 meters.
4. Shoveled pass to running back Elijah Mitchell, who gained 5 yards.
5. Passed over the head of tight end Charlie Woerner, who took an exit to the right.
6. Rushed to the right and launched a 20-meter rocket at Aiyuk, which beat security Talanoa Hufanga.
7. Complete a 30-yard pass to Samuel, who beat Ambry Thomas. It was the same pass Garoppolo missed when he targeted Aiyuk down the field.
8. Ran a quarterback draw and gain 10 yards.
9. Complete a 5-yard pass to Sanu, who curled.
10. Completed a 5 yard control pass to Mitchell.
11. Dodged a sack but then passed a pass over the head of Ross Dwelley, who ran a search route and was open. Lance needed to get back on his feet.
12. Thrown the ball into Dwelley’s apartment to no avail.
13. Complete a 20 yard play pass to Trent Sherfield, who traveled a deep cross road from right to left.
14. Scrambled to his left and completed a 5-yard pass to Jennings after being touched for a sack. Players always play after a sack in practice.
15. Passed 30 yards to Sherfield on 3rd and 15th. Lance threw the pass from the pocket and Sherfield walked a deep crossing road from right to left.
16. Scrambled to the left for 10 yards at 3rd and 6th.
17. Rolled left and dropped the ball at Dwelley 6 yards.
18. Has run a zone read to the left and gained 3 yards.
19. Checked towards Mitchell for five yards at 3rd and 1.
20. Thrown an incomplete through pass intended for Travis Benjamin. Ken Webster interrupted the throw.
21. The 3rd and 6th, completed a 3-yard pass to tight end Joshua Perkins, who ran an outing in front of the sticks for some reason.
22. On 4 and 3, passed a 5-yard pass to Nsimba Webster, who made a quick exit.
23. The 3rd and 8th, completed a 15-yard pass to Wayne Gallman, who wheeled down the left sideline.
