Jimmy Garoppolo may be away, but he won’t be returning to the New England Patriots, according to ESPN. Jordan schultz.
Schultz reported that the Patriots are not “chasing” the quarterback, having re-signed Cam Newton to a one-year contract this offseason.
The San Francisco 49ers moved into position to pass Garoppolo on Friday after the team traded for the third overall in this year’s draft, one with plenty of QBs expected to move closer to the top.
Various reports from New England had indicated that the lack of trade came from the San Francisco side. Greg Bedard of the Boston Sports Journal said in a radio appearance that the Patriots decided to move on after San Francisco did not engage in trade talks (h / t Dakota Randall of NESN).
Before the Patriots re-signed Newton, Bedard had reported that the Garoppolo acquisition was the team’s “plan A” at the quarterback (h / t Connor Roche from Boston.com).
San Francisco general manager John Lynch acknowledged in February that the 49ers “probably need to add someone” to replace Garoppolo, who was marred by injuries and missed 23 starts dating back to 2018 (h / t Matt Barrows of Athletic).
But moving up to No.3 in the draft gives San Francisco the chance to select a quarterback who should be ready to enter as a starter immediately.
The leading teams in the draft will have their pick from a number of NFL ready flaggers. Assuming Trevor Lawrence sits in first place overall for the Jacksonville Jaguars, that still leaves Zach Wilson of BYU, Trey Lance of North Dakota State, Justin Fields of Ohio State, and Mac Jones of Alabama.
