Jimmy Garoppolo's first pre-season match could not have been worse

Last week's story that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo made five consecutive interceptions after practice was a weird, funny thing, but nothing too serious.

It seemed more serious after seeing Garoppolo fight fiercely against the Denver Broncos on Monday night.

Garoppolo, who was playing his first game since the start of last season, missed his first five passes before passing a winless screen pass. He launched an interception and a safe choice six was dropped. His final grade was 0.0.

He looked bothered by the rush and was just not sharp. The offensive line of San Francisco, who could not escape the heat of Garoppolo, did not help.

It's a short run in a preseason game, and he had not played for 11 months, but it was troubling.

Jimmy Garoppolo gets 0 yards in return

Here are the first five passages of Garoppolo: Switch to the line, intercepted on a wild throw under pressure, switches to the line, interception interrupted and a bad passage wide and incomplete.

The Broncos defense, along with new coach Vic Fangio, had a lot to do with Garoppolo's problems. Denver has generated pressure on virtually every click. Bradley Chubb came out free on a waterfall inside and Garoppolo hurled his throw. Isaac Yiadom chose it.

Almost six could have been worse. Again at the pressure, cornerback De'Vante Bausby jumped the post and passed Garoppolo's pass in arms with a clear field in front of him. He let go, saving an embarrassing moment for Garoppolo.

A pass to Matt Breida without any win was at least a success. He slammed a 0-in-5 start. And after that, Garoppolo's night was over.

Not a good start for Garoppolo

A bad pre-season quarter does not mean that Garoppolo will not have a good season. He showed his talent with the Patriots and again with the 49ers at the end of the 2017 season.

A better outing in the third qualifying match of the 49ers may not be as serious. It is unlikely that Garoppolo and the 49 other starting players will participate in the fourth pre-season game. The team and Garoppolo would likely like to have momentum before the start of the regular season.

For Garoppolo, the days will be better after his return from ACL surgery. Fortunately for him, he did not count.
